Solo Coast to Coast Bicycle Trip Across America

On August 11th, 1983, I dipped my bicycle tire in the Atlantic Ocean at Jacksonville Beach, Florida, then pedalled to San Diego, California and dipped my tire in the Pacific Ocean to symbolize going from coast to coast across America by bike. I left with $100 and knocked on strangers’ doors to find places to stay. Here’s the story of my journey, going through 8 bicycle tires, being shot at & having the best day of my life as I descended the mountain into San Diego at 50 mph on the interstate, side by side with the cars.
